The news of Hugh McKeown's passing brought great sadness to my heart. Hugh was a colleague, a great administration mentor in my international experience in education. We shared some great moments in the few years we worked together. From my hiring for the Shenzhen school to the excursion to Macau to visit his godchild to an educational conference in Hong Kong. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the family and will be remembered in prayers. May he rest in Peace.

Dear Judy and family,
My thoughts are with you. Hugh was always a welcoming blessing to myself and my family. We have enjoyed years of living across from each other and sharing memories over the years. I can remember so many wonderful times. I remember coming to Keswick for the first time with John to visit Brian and Isobel on South Channel. That visit inspired us to move our family here. We became neighbors. Hugh was always so kind and generous to include us in family gatherings. I will always remember the special memories of Thanksgivings and the fun we shared at his 75th birthday. Please know that I am only a stones throw away for tea and a hug.
Sincerely, Jude Wood

Dear Judy:
I'm so saddened to hear that Hugh is no longer with us. My deepest sympathies for your loss! When I first met Hugh, he surprised me by greeting me in Cantonese. Over the years, we had a lot of interesting conversations on Chinese culture, philosophy, arts, education, etc. His observation of Chinese culture from an "outsider's" perspective led me to some new discoveries of my own culture. Hugh was kind and gentle. May he rest in peace! You and your family will be in my prayers!

My special thoughts go out to Judy and family. Hugh played a huge role in my father Herb Carnegie's life. Hugh's understanding of equity and inclusiveness led him to introduce and apply character initiatives like Future Aces. His commitment to values education ultimately transformed the lives of countless youth and educators. Hugh had a big heart with a never ending desire to want to do more. I will forever remember him and strive to follow his lead. Hugh's presence in our lives was truly a gift. Bernice Carnegie

Judy, Chris, Erin and family; I am sending so much love and healing light to you all at this time. From the moment I meant Hugh, he exuded such love, love of life and family, and was a light that so many were drawn to. I was one that was drawn. Spending time with both Hugh and Judy was an idyllic treat, where their love buoyed you. Hugh often had me transfixed as he shared his wisdom and stories of yore. He made such an impact in my life, and I am grateful that you all were able to share and celebrate this incredible man. May you all have time to linger in the memories and heal with your hearts full of love. xoxo

My friend Hugh ,was a very special human being, thoughtful, a thinker, great friend, understood the world, kind, sweet, dry humor and a great teacher in every way.
When I met Hugh I was a young Mother, doing volunteer work in the community , I was very naïve about how things worked, didn't understand community , politics etc., I have had 3 mentors in my life when I worked with the North York Board of Education ,the late Karl Kinzinger, Ted Gould and now Hugh, they showed me the ropes, protected me ,I always asked why they wanted me around , answer was I could get things done behind the scenes they couldn't do as part of the system. I think I got the best part of the deal ,lessons for the rest of my life .
Hugh was principal of a school in the early Eighties, and did a very radical thing ,the school was very multicultural, so Hugh organized a pot luck dinner every parent brought a dish from their culture and all the community shared ,it was the first lesson in understanding ,just brilliant in its simplicity ,(that was Hugh)!
When I had my home in the Beaches, in Toronto Hugh was often part of the events and gatherings. Hugh was always working on getting the Politicians to understand Multiculturalism and why if society was going to grow and flourish, this had to be understood.
Well, my best memory, we took a group of School Board Trustees on a trip to see the school system in Jamaica and to meet with teachers and people at all levels of society , Prime Minister Seaga was a client of mine through the late Kaye Baxter, Counsel General and good friend so they helped us arrange visit. I wasn't too keen on the trip and didn't want to have to watch the Trustees all the time, but it was important to Hugh and the policies he was attempted to change for the good of the students , so we went, he kept me calm and he made me a bet that he could have Lobster a difference way every night for dinner , I said no way, but you know Hugh, he won the bet even if he had to go in the kitchen and be creative with the chef.
Now, I have to mention Judy, Hugh and Judy had one of the special love stories , they adored one another and respected one another in every way ,I remember when we all first met Judy , she was so nervous at meeting Hugh's friends , we were just so delighted that Hugh had found his true love .They took care of one another in the most loving way ,when Judy was hurt a few months ago, I remember Hugh saying to me I can't be sick because Judy needs me to be strong .
I had the great honor of knowing Hugh and would call him on my travels, from anywhere in the world.
My condolences to Judy and all of his family.
He will always be in my heart as one of my very special friends.
I will sign off Elizabeth which Hugh always called me because he knew that name bugged me .

Dear Judy and Family and loyal little Jiggs.
My heart goes out to all of you as we say 'adieu" to Hugh. The many accolades seen here is a tribute to how much Hugh meant to a lot of people in the education field and the world in general.
To me, he was my big cousin, second oldest in our generation. He was always the storyteller, with tales from his travels and life adventures. He was the young prankster (along with brother Brian and cousin Allan) who teased and played tricks on three young girls (Gwen, Joan and Kathryn) at the opposite end of the hall in the old manse while we were supposed to be sleeping. Someone started the whipped cream fight at the dining room table...
I will always see him with that particular smile on his face. He was the keeper of the stories of our extended family. Just recently when we got to visit, he told me about a piece of our history that I didn't know.
Imagine the strength of love between two people. He married his beloved Judy then whisked her off to a foreign land on an adventure that would fill their lives with stories and memories for many years.
What a wonderful life he got to enjoy with Judy and Jiggs and Family in his beautiful home in Keswick. Hugh will be forever missed and forever loved.
cousin Kathryn

Dear family of" Hugh".
I wish to send my condolences to you all and wish that all the wonderful memories together with Hugh will continue to be with you forever.
I worked with Hugh for many years at Bond Education Group and have very fond memories of our philosophical discussions, working on behalf of all students, and the many good times at luncheons and gatherings.
Hugh provided me with a wonderful understanding of international education. He and Judy had welcomed my wife and I to their home in Hong Kong and treated us like their own guests even though we were there on business.
We at Bond are indebted to Hugh's knowledge and efforts as a leader of Bond's organization and his dedication to its educational endeavours.
May the memories of his impact be with us forever.

Dear Mr. Hugh McKeown’s Family,
I’m writing on behalf of the school staff at Yinghua-Bond International College to express our condolences for the loss of Mr. McKeown. We deeply saddened by the news of Mr. Hugh Mckeown passing. A person that departs from this earth never truly leaves, for they are still alive in our hearts and minds, through us, they live on. Please accept our condolences, he will not be forgotten.
Mr. McKeown was the one who helped Yinghua-Bond to be able to prosper without any difficulties in the earlier stage of school development. He was more than a consultant, but we always considered him as a core member of our school. Whenever anyone needed something, whether it was help with work or to talk through something personal, he was always there.
In the spirit of Mr. McKeown, we want to assure you that we’ll always consider his family part of the Yinghua-Bond family. Whatever you need, we will help in any way we can. It’s the very least we can do.
We weep in agony of such a great loss. He will always be remembered, as he will be carved in the deepest chambers of our hearts.
Our condolences for this tragic loss.
Sincerely,

He was a relentless and persuasive advocate for all those who had special needs, no matter what the consequence.
Hugh taught me a great deal, by both word and deed.
I was honoured to be his friend and proud to be his colleague.

Hugh was a very sweet man who made everyone feel special. We have shared so many special moments with him through the years dating back to when he was placed at our public school as a teacher in training. Many winter nights, we found Hugh staying with us as to avoid the bad driving in the bad weather. In later years, we spent a lot of time at Keswick with Hugh and Judy consuming morning coffee and baked goodies. To Judy and Brian and the rest of the family, Hugh's cherished memories will get us through this. RIP my dear cousin. You will be missed, but you will never be forgotten. God bless you Hugh.
