Obituary of Yvonne Sullivan

On Sunday, June 27th, 2021, Yvonne (Bonnie) Sullivan passed away quietly at the age of 68 at the Margaret Bahen Hospice, after a hard-fought battle with brain cancer.

Born in Meaford, Ontario, Bonnie was a caring daughter to her predeceased father, Sheldon Mills, and is survived by her mother, Truus Dales, and her four siblings: Ray (Jan), Elaine (Dennis), Ron (Mary) and Cecil (Gail). She was a devoted wife to Scott (in their 40th year of marriage), a loving and supportive mother to Robyn, Colin (Beth) and Lindsay (Matt), loving sister-in-law to Craig (Margot), Kerry (Jim) and caring aunt/great aunt to several nieces and nephews.

Bonnie enjoyed many pastimes; spending hours out in her garden at both the cottage and the family home, traveling the world, curling with her friends at the Richmond Hill Curling Club, trying out new golf courses in the summer months, baking over the holidays (you couldn’t get enough of her empire cookies) and spending time with the kids chasing sunsets in Fenelon Falls at the family cottage. She loved animals (especially her beloved dog Tucker) and going for walks and bike rides on the many trails, but most of all she enjoyed making memories with family and friends.

Friendship was something that Bonnie cherished and developed everywhere she went. She kept in touch with nursing school classmates, her Unionville/Markham friends, her curling team members, her golfing mates, co-workers from Thornhill Medical and always enjoyed a friendly round of euchre with Brenda and Kevin.

Her many years in nursing were a true testament to her caring, thoughtful and generous personality. Bonnie graduated from Nightingale School of Nursing and got her first job in the Emergency Department at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Toronto. From there she moved to the Sunnybrook Emergency Department for a number of years and then to a family physician practice in Markham. After Robyn, Colin and Lindsay were born she left the profession to focus on raising her family and returned back to nursing as the kids finished high school, eventually retiring in 2018.

Our sincerest thanks and gratitude go out to all of the doctors, nurses and caregivers at the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Hospital and the staff and volunteers at the Margaret Bahen Hospice in Newmarket for their hours of support, guidance and care. A sincere thank you goes out to the countless friends and family members who brought meals, flowers/gifts and who were a part of those memorable garage and backyard visits, your kind gestures were appreciated more than you could ever know.

In loving memory of Bonnie, and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Odette Cancer Centre c/o Sunnybrook  https://donate.sunnybrook.ca/tribute ( in the designation box, click on Odette Cancer Centre) or the Margaret Bahen Hospice. A celebration of life will take place in the summer of 2022 when it is safe for all of us to be together.
