My deepest condolences to the family. Mr. & Mrs. Wilson, to me, were a true loving couple. My Mom, Dad & family thought the world of them. In my early adult years I did not see them very much as I lived and worked in Toronto. Later in my life I had the pleasure of serving them at MacDonald's which they would occasionally visit. Those visits were always great for me as Tom with his sense of humor always made my day. I also saw them with Ron at Swiss Chalet and that was a delight to have chat with them and have a few laughs.

Thank you so much, Deborah! We certainly were fortunate to have each other as neighbours, and how wonderful that even more in recent years you were able to continue that relationship with them through visits and your work. Of course, never a dull moment and lots of chatting with mom and dad!

To the Wilson Family
I enjoyed every short visit with your father, and you know it was never a short visit.
Always a story, seldom the same one, always a laugh, not just a laugh, but a belly laugh.
I was always welcomed by your mother and father always feeling like one of the family.
From having my vehicles worked on in the service station, to assisting in the sale of both properties.
Every minute I had the opportunity to spend has never, nor will ever be forgotten.
Thanks for the opportunity of being part of your life.

We are so sad at the passing of Uncle Tom. I (Linda) have such fond memories of my many summers spent in Keswick... At the garage helping out, helping Aunt Phyllis in the kitchen, hanging out with the boys and Susan and the Friday night parties in the kitchen with the piano. Ya- BA-da-BA-doo! No doubt that is being heard all over heaven now!!! Our deepest sympathy to all the family. May he rest in peace. Linda and Glenn

Hello Linda and Glenn, dear cousins,
Thank you for your tribute. Your memories are of a wonderful time, we had so much fun together! And the funniest part of all of course was when we went to the show in Sutton and dad fell asleep, and then woke up and yelled out Ya-BA-da-BA-doo! We certainly had some awesome times together which we will always treasure, and hope to see you and all of your family as soon as we are all able to get together! With love, from Susan and all the family.

My condolences to the family. Both your parents were so special and such a big part of all our lives. I loved seeing the old photos and reminiscing of times at the home AND garage on Boyers. I will truly miss the many stories your Dad had of mine....sometimes he would just chuckle...knowing it was a story maybe he should not have shared. I loved it ! May your many memories help you to go through this difficult time and also carry you through life. Hugs to you all <3 Cindy Jowett-Brinks

Thank you, Cindy. Our families were certainly very fortunate to have known each other so well and spend many great times together. And the stories - they could tell a few about each other, and maybe we shouldn't know them all! I'm so thankful that we have remained friends and been able to support each other through the years. Thanks for the hugs and love,

Dad, with his long time good friend Merlyn Winch and son Wayne. We think this is April 15, 2010 on dad’s 85th birthday. Merlyn wasn’t well but he wasn’t going to miss dad’s birthday celebration and open house. Merlyn passed away shortly after that in May of that year. Two great men, greatly missed by Wayne and I. Our dads.
With love

For the family of Tom and Phyllis Wilson from the Daughter and Family of Marie and Charlie Boyle late of Keswick, Ontario. Today I read of the passing of both of Mum and Dad’s best friends and companions of so many many years. Mum and Phyllis looked so much alike and acted in the same way, that so many people mistook them for Sisters. You would see these four young at heart people attending many Modern Square Dances, and just out and about together enjoying they time together. When I would come to visit Mum and Dad at Maple Hill, or in Keswick in their later years, I could always tell by the sound of laughter and joking that Tom and Phyllis were together and the four “kids” would be playing a great game of echure, or making plans for their next trip out together somewhere.
In the years as I was growing up, I got to know both Tom and Phyllis so well, and so did all of our family. I am sure as they shared the loss of my parents with our family, please know that now my family send condolences to everyone of you. As an after thought, can’t you all just hear the giggles and laughter in our minds as these four young people have joined again for their fun around the table playing cards again, or even in their sets of squares as they tap their toes to the music they all loved so much. Blessing to all of us here together wishing for that one time again when we could see them all here with us and enjoying the lives they lived. My framily’s hearts join with your in memory and love of these two very special people Tom and Phyllis Wilson. Dear Susan, Terry, Tim & Families:
We are so sorry for your loss. I have only fond memories of both your parents. I often accompanied my grandparents and your parents to square dances and many good games of Euchre. Your dad always kept us laughing. He would make Charlie laugh so hard that he could barely catch his breath. Their laughter was always followed by all of us laughing at them laughing until we all had tears running down our faces. The four of them had many adventures together going on trips in their vans. I will be forever grateful for our times spent together.
Thinking of you all during this sad time.

To the Wilson family, Michael and I offer our sincerest condolences to all of you.
Tom has been a wonderful neighbour to the Rye family for so many years. I especially enjoyed cutting his lawn over the last few years, he always had an awesome “old time” story to tell me each week and a then compliment to send me on my way. When our teenage son took a few turns with Mr. Wilsons lawncare he’d often give him a tour of his plaques and photos proudly displayed in his sitting room. Michael and I would smile each evening that we drove by his house all lit up with Tom and Phyllis playing cards in the front room with Teera. Tom always made us smile…every day. He will be missed.

Does anyone else remember what GR.6 stands for? Never mind answering that, Tim, Terry and Ron - I know you know! Interesting trivia question. Stay tuned for another post. Dad would be amused by this! Judging by my hair and flood pants, I would place this about 1971 or 1972. 50 years can fly by pretty fast! Uncle Don and Aunt Dorothy are in this picture. There is an STP sign over the door, and I think Uncle Don distributed STP. Is that my cousin Marion?? How beautiful!

My Dad
Dad, a man that I admired and adored from the day I was born. Dad, always there, always incredibly strong in mind and body, yet so soft at heart, all wrapped up in one amazing man. I always told Dad that he was so unique and special, and that I didn’t know anyone else like him. He was so tenacious, so smart, so hard working, such an incredible entrepreneur. Of course, I could go on and on with words to describe him, as he was my dad!
Dad had goals, and he achieved what he set out to do. Firstly, he was a loving and adoring husband. He treated my mom like gold and I will always be thankful especially for that. If you knew him like I knew him you would notice that whenever we had a get together, he would be watching my mom to see how she was doing and that she was enjoying herself. This was subtle but always there. I have so many pictures of all of our get togethers and inevitably, there will be a picture or two of him looking at her. For their last anniversary, 72 years on Valentine’s day 2020, a quartet came into their suite to sing to them, and he spent most of his time watching mom instead of the quartet. They had a great life together, raising four children, grieving and managing through the loss of their littlest daughter Patti, building up their corner at Boyers and Woodbine with a lovely home and a thriving service station, enjoying their family and friends, and then in their latter years enjoying travel, their second home in Florida, and of course their square dancing. What a couple.
From the time I was a little girl I would listen to dad talk about the things he wanted to do and achieve and I watched him set out to do just that, of course with mom by his side, likely driving a lot of what transpired. They had ten acres, and dad and mom utilized that asset to meet their goals. They sold a lot to buy their Florida home. They sold a lot and bought a motor home, which by the way was in my mom’s name and she held the license – a strong woman to match a strong man. They sold a lot and built the ‘lanai’ at the front of the house – that lovely stone section of the home that they always wanted. They so enjoyed that room, playing cards, hosting neighbours and friends, and watching out the windows to wave at the neigbours as they went by. There wasn’t a thing that went on around that corner that they didn’t see! Before I was born there were many other goals that dad achieved, and many hardships he endured. A small portion of that description is written in his obituary.
When I was little, dad was always working crazy hours at that garage. 24 hours a day seven days a week for a long time, with the boys and mom at his side to serve gas, service cars, run out for tow jobs, and in between take the time to smile and chat with customers, friends and neighbours. Dad always said if there wasn’t a part for the car, he would just make it. He was certainly well known and appreciated for his skill as a mechanic! I used to love to jump in the tow truck with dad to go on those calls, or head on out to the dump with him, those were funny little highlights of time for us together. Being a little girl with unfortunately not a mechanical bone in my body, I found other ways to be with my dad. I helped him in whatever way I could and I was always a helper to mom which made him happy. When he came into the house at night I would be in bed and he would always lie down beside me and tell me stories and sing songs. Inevitably, mom would find him sound asleep beside me and me still awake, hoping for more stories. As my brother’s read this, I can imagine them thinking, oh yes Suzie was spoiled. Well, I guess I was!
Dad … I’m sure his middle name was Work …. When I went out to wait for the bus, there my dad would be sweeping that entire front lot of the service station with a big push broom. He kept that shop as clean as a whip and people used to remark that they’d never seen a mechanic with such clean hands. He was fastidious, we can say that for sure. He didn’t just work, he did it with his all, and always did a good job. When I came home he was working, when I went to bed he was working. He just liked to work! In more recent years after they closed the garage business, I would go to visit mom and dad, and dad would always say “Well, I got up at 6:30 this morning to work on …”. Then it became “I got up at 6:00 this morning to work on …”. Then it became “Well, I got up at 5:30 this morning to work on …”. I asked him why he was up so early and he said “Well I don’t want to die in my sleep!” He just loved life and he wanted to live and work! He was working on the lawn, the garden, the workshop, the car, the lawn mower, the bird feeders (always battling the squirrels and making ingenious ways to try to thwart their attack on the bird feeders), the driveway, the motorhome, …. One day I went there to visit in the middle of winter on a warm day and I asked him what he had been doing. He told me he had spent the morning raking the snow, spreading it around so that it would melt faster. I’m chuckling even as I write this because I remember how much he loved to just work! I always knew that when dad passed away, I would have to write about his favourite pastime, work!
So interesting to me, and I have to share it, was dad’s keen interest in the world and the people in it. He had a hard time letting go of his physical life, even though he missed mom and wanted to be with her. He said to me a few weeks ago, “I am just so interested in what’s going to happen in this world. I wish I could live another 20 years to see it”. He lived almost 100 years and watched and experienced so many changes in the world, and he could see that we are facing some interesting and unusual times, which he wished he could stay to observe. Another day he said his mind was ready to live another 20 years but his body just wouldn’t do it. All my life dad told me he would live to 96. A few years ago he realized he was getting close and modified that to 106! He made it to almost the end of his 96th year, his 96th birthday would have been on April 15th. It is hard for a man of that strength and will to live to actually let go. I think for all of us we just have to remember the example he gave us and that life is for the living. He would want us to live, and of course, to work!
This is a very hard time for all of us in our family, both immediate and extended. Dad was the youngest of his siblings. He was I think also the strongest, both mind and body, and he has always been ‘there for us’. He and mom outlived so many of their friends and family, and they were a constant rock for all of us. Our family has had the wonderful blessing of having our parents to such a great age, and for the most part with excellent health and the ability to participate in life with such energy. Now we have to learn to live without their physical presence, but they will always be with us. All the lessons they taught us, all the guidance and love, and yes, we all know how to work!
There are so many wonderful friends and family that it is impossible to mention all the relationships and fun times. I can only say, thank you to everyone, from our childhood, from our parents’ time on Boyer’s Rd., to their times with good friends they met in Rambler’s Rest Florida, and all the people they met in their travels, retirement and at Cedarvale Retirement community. They had a wonderful run at life and all of you were a big part of that!
And so, I end my thoughts with a poem that dad told me pretty well every night when I went to bed, and then I told my children and he told all his grandchildren. It is a wonderful story, but hard to do it justice without dad’s voice and enthusiasm. He had a lot of dramatic pauses and crescendos, and a few funny words of his own in it – but here goes …
WORK
There was a man his name was Work
His wife bought him a coloured shirt
He bought a goat to please his kids
And I'll just tell you what that goat did
He 'et' (Dad's version of 'ate') the shirt clean off the line
But Mr. Work caught him in time
He swore that shirt he would get back
So, he tied the goat to the railroad track
Twas ore of ore (Dad's version of au revoir), but not goodbye
For that blamed goat was too wise to die
He coughed and strained with might main
Coughed up the shirt ... and flagged the train
Loving you forever, Dad. We carry on the rest of our lives with a big part of you in us and with us, that is the greatest gift. Now, it is time for you to rest and be with Mom. You’ve done your job, so off you go “Home, Home on the Range”!
Love always,
Susan

Yes, the Wilsons were loved and well respected in the community. I knew them as I worked at the Ford dealership in Sutton and had a working relationship with their shop in Keswick. A great family to be sure, honest and true. I loved your stories about them in the obit. Rest in peace, Tom & Phyllis.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Tom and Phyllis Wilson in the past few months.
I had the privilege of knowing this wonderful couple and their sons for over 30 years. It is no surprise to me that Tom followed his wife so soon after as they seemed to truly enjoy each others company both in business and in life. It is unfortunate that due to Covid 19 the community could not give this couple the proper tribute that they so richly deserved. Condolences to the Wilson family.

Thank you for your post Glenn. Yes mom and dad were such a close couple it definitely was hard for dad to continue without her. Right to the end he made sure she was looked after first.

My heartfelt condolences to the family. I met Mr. Wilson about 12 years ago riding my bike to and from work along Boyers Road. Each day I was greeted with a wave and good morning and some mornings he came to meet me at roadside to have a quick chat and tell me stories. It sure is not the same riding by now. What a kind man, well spoken and proud. May he rest in peace. Pamela Way

Thank you Pamela. So sweet to read your comment and picture dad out there chatting with you. He loved to greet people and chat. It was his daily routine for work at the garage and he carried that right through his retirement. Nice to know he had that impact in you!

My deepest sympathy to you all, Tom and Phyllis were great family friends and both will be missed. I have a bit of a story for you of the last time I saw them. They showed up here at my house and when Tom saw the house from the driveway the first thing he said was that he knew this house as his father, uncle and friends built the original farm house which has been added to over the years. And when I showed him a newspaper from the early 1900's that was put in the walls, he was tearing up then laughed and said that sounds like something dad would do. I will miss them both dearly.

I know that house well Darin. Your dad and mom were instrumental in starting my mom and dad square dancing. They also shared a more than 50 year friendship. The stories that Doug and Dad could tell , two smart , knowledgeable men , great friends , with great respect for each other. Both well loved in the community. Merlin Winch was in that circle too. another real gentleman. All three could make you smile.
