I met Rob at the YMCA over 20 years ago, and enjoyed our brief chats most mornings. Many years later, when I joined the Office of the Chief Justice, I was thrilled to learn that he was appointed a Master! I've been to many swearing-in ceremonies of new judicial officials, but never before had I heard such personal and moving remarks by the judge/master being sworn in. He proudly identified as a gay man and remarked how important that day was to him for that reason. While I did not work with him closely, I held a huge amount of respect for him. I know this sentiment was shared by his closest colleagues. My sincere condolences to his family, his friends and his colleagues. I know he will be deeply missed.

I had the privilege of appearing before Master Muir as a lawyer, as well as interacting with him at various OBA events, particularly SOGIC. Rob was kind, courteous, and had a fierce intellect. It was always a pleasure having matters before Rob given his calm disposition and friendly demeanour. He was a mentor to many, and will be sorely missed. My condolences to his friends and family.

To Rob’s family: I’m sharing in your sorrow and I am so very sorry for your immeasurable loss. I met Rob in 1985, during first year law school at Osgoode, and we remained friends since then. Rob’s wonderful sense of humour, kindness and intelligence left an indelible mark on me and all who knew him. I feel privileged to have known Rob and my thoughts are with you during this truly difficult time.

My condolences to the family.
I appeared before His Honour in court. He was fair, patient, insightful and deliberate. I recently wrote to Master Muir privately asking him for a favour. He could have easily and understandably ignored me, brushed me off or given me any number of reasons why he could not assist. Instead, his response was considerate and detailed the extensive effort he made to assist me. He signed off with "Perhaps next time I see you in court (or on zoom).I hope all is well."
May his memory be a blessing.

We send our love and prayers to David and family, Aunt Jean and the many friends of Rob. Rob was a special cousin to my husband and they shared many fun memories of summer visits. I met Rob when my husband asked Rob to be a groomsman in our wedding. I instantly liked him, because he was easy-going and friendly. We will cherish the memory of the last time we were together, when we spent a quick overnight visit in Toronto as he showed us the sights and spoiled us. It is hard to believe that we will not spend more time together on earth, but we will think of his smile and his laughter with great fondness. Brian, Carla, Carsten, and Wren Houck

My deepest condolences to Rob’s family, friends and colleagues. We first met when he appeared before me in construction cases prior to his appointment. It was always a pleasure to have Rob on a case – he was well prepared, knowledgeable and polite. He treated his fellow lawyers with respect and courtesy.
I was delighted to welcome Rob as a colleague in 2009 when he joined the Bench. He had the respect of bench and bar in his work as a Master. His door was always open to his colleagues, regardless of how busy he was with work – whether to talk about a case, a cruise or simply to chat. He was insightful in his work. He was a team player with his colleagues.
Having watched his funeral service from home, it is clear that Rob has many friends who love him dearly, and a wonderful family with whom he made special memories.
And he was a mensch in every sense of the word. He is gone too soon. I will miss him.

I met Master Muir, or Rob, as he insisted outside of court, when I joined the SCJ as a Registrar in 2012, later working in administrative support for him directly. I recall his kindness, wit and sense of humour putting me at ease immediately. I had the privilege of observing his professional, kind and calm demeanour to all in court and many friendly, thoughtful and encouraging chats in chambers. I looked forward to my work day, knowing that it included him. Rob was and will always be an important influential person in my life. He greatly influenced many things in how I "go about my day". He believed in me and he let me know it. He was a mentor to me. Though I am deeply sad to be writing this, I am grateful to have had the good fortune to know him. Rob was a most warm and welcoming colleague when I joined the court 21 months ago. He was so easy to get to know that I felt that I had known him for years. Rob was easy to talk with, enjoyed a good laugh, and was always available to assist with a challenging issue. Very smart, yet never stuffy, and always pragmatic in his approach; a genuine role model for someone new to the court.
He was a true "mensch" in every sense of that word. A decent and kind man, thinking of others. Long will he be remembered, and missed, by all who had the pleasure to know him. My deepest condolences to his family. Rob was a special man, who left us far too soon.

I am deeply sorry to hear the news about Rob and offer my sympathies to his family and friends. Rob and I worked together for many years. I look back on those early days at Blaneys together so fondly. Rob was my “boss” but he was able to walk that fine line of also being a friend. Only a few people at the firm were close enough to me to call me Lynn. Rob did. He felt like an older brother at times and I valued the relationship we had so much. Rob may have seemed quiet, but to those of us who knew him well, he was wickedly funny. The image of Rob with his head down on his desk while we laughed together is ingrained in my memory. Summer picnics at the firm playing Family Feud, company baseball games, drinks after hours and heartfelt chats on so many topics. Before he left the firm we reminisced on those days and it meant so much to me that he felt the same about those years. Rob was one of the kindest men I have ever known and I am so sad to be writing this today. I treasure those years. RIP my friend.

I met Rob in 2009, when he became my colleague. I knew, from his swearing-in speech, that he was going to be a terrific addition to our group- bright, forthright and humorous. Over the years, my first impressions of Rob were reinforced many times. Though respectful of all, Rob always spoke his mind from the heart. He was the tidiest member of the office- his office pristine, his desk cleared at the end of the day. Both were signs of a highly organized mind, he assured me. I agreed. Rob was a charmer with a sometimes zany sense of humour. I always enjoyed sitting with him at Masters’ conferences, though I feared he would have me in stitches during a serious lectures, but it was worth it. I met Rob in our first year at Osgoode and was immediately struck by his kindness, intellect and sharp wit.
We became good friends and were room mates in our early years of practicing law. We enjoyed the local live music scene as well as annual christmas gatherings and spring golf trips. Our smoke filled Christmas levees, which continued long after we lived together, were a mish mash of friends and family from all corners of our lives.
We were opposites in many ways but whenever we were together we clicked. He taught me so much about following your own path with integrity and wit. His red-faced, knee slapping, embrace of laughter was contagious. As was his poise and intention when the moment required.
Rob's passing leaves a huge hole in so many areas of our personal and professional lives. I extend my condolences to Rob's family and to all friends and colleagues who had the good fortune to know him.

I met Rob (and his great pals Terry Pether, Bill Anderson and Sean Dewart) in the summer of 1991 at the Thursday night party hosted by Blaney McMurtry to conclude articling interview week. They were smart and fun and funny and a little irreverent and did not take themselves too seriously. I changed my plans that night and am so grateful I did. You could not help but be charmed by Rob’s humour and Jack Benny mannerisms but what was really affecting was his kindness, decency and integrity. I have such fond memories of Rob and our friendship during those early years and the many Thursday nights that began at the Silver Rail. I knew Rob back when he first began as a lawyer. A kinder, more sympathetic person you will never find, with an absolute wicked sense of humour, and a mischievous twinkle in his eye. I had the opportunity to overhear Rob on a phone call with a client who just needed reassurance, and his voice and demeanour was everything you would want: kind, gentle, knowledgeable and above all patient. When I teased him about it, he just blushed a deep red and mumbled something about the client being worried and scared of some neighbour and he was just trying to make her feel like she had an advocate. That’s the Rob I knew; one minute cheeky, the next going above and beyond to make someone feel better. We have lost an amazing light.
