Roland was an outstanding human being. His commitment to the Environment was long held and authentic - born out of his love of nature. His carvings of little creatures and butterflies (I have one) were beautiful and were again a reflection of his love of nature and the environment. Roland could be firm and tenacious but he was also a very kind and gentle person. I will miss Roland and I will remember him always.

So sorry to hear about Roland’s passing. I knew for some years Roland has been working through significant challenges, in steadfast and unswerving commitment to environmental issues and his art. Talking with him many times on the phone over the many recent years I think this commission for quiet determined action blossomed.
I do remember earlier days of action on the deplorable Thane Aluminum Smelter, the condition of the Maskinonge river and of course their negative impact, continuing to this day, on Lake Simcoe. Those early years some quarter century ago, in struggles tramping in the field with me, investigating, researching and documenting were invaluable to real understanding, and fueled long-term entrusting in nature by Roland. Thank god this happened. We are all, and the natural environment of Georgina is better for it. Rest in peace good friend.
Paul Harpley, Georgina

Roland Peacock
Roland Peacock’s passing on March 27th has left us without our “Georgina Environmental Ambassador”, our conscientious objector to all environmental
damages and threats to our natural landscape. His talent in wood carving
became an outlet for expression of his passion and sympathy for abuses he
witnessed in the natural environment within the Town of Georgina. Many
of his splendid carvings mirrored the agony he felt that nature suffered from
either pollution, overuse, or disrespect. Among the issues he tackled were
the Georgina Thane Smelter (a long battle), the pollution and water loss in
Maskinonge River, and the never-ending misuse of pesticides in agriculture
(resulting in bee decline and loss of wildlife habitats). I was always aware
of how well he understood scientific issues, when he often called me to
discuss impending threats to the landscapes of Georgina or further to the
world. He was unique in his capability to express as much as he could in
his magnificent carvings, always armed with a new carving project to
symbolize a new threat, expressly aimed at nurturing sympathy for nature.
I will miss his regular calls to announce situations that developed as will
other members of our small circle of people who joined him in his quest
for environmental care. He was a modern-day Aldo Leopold or John Muir,
in his cause for the environment, and will be missed.

To the Peacock family my sincere condolences for your loss. I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Peacock but am so grateful for the gifts of his beautiful wildlife carvings. These gifts he presented to Ravenshoe United Church each year for a very long time. I can assure you these gifts are treasured by our congregation.
sincerely

I always enjoyed my conversations with Roland. He loved his community and most especially Lake Simcoe. I have a couple pieces of his artwork and will cherish them forever. He would often call me about a local issue and say "its the pest calling" and then laugh. He was never a pest, I always valued his calls and his concerns were always coming from the heart. My condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.
