As the faculty of the Behavioural Psychology program at St. Lawrence College, we want to express our condolences and sorrow that Matt is no longer with us. We remember him as such a kind and genuine person, someone we could always count on to be there in class, smiling, engaged, and, of course, always supportive of everyone around him. He touched us all with his sincerity and empathy. We miss him deeply, and feel privileged that we had the chance to know him.

Matt and I were in hockey school together (if you could call it hockey at that age), learning to skate and fall with one another. Outside of the rink, we were childhood friends, until I moved away after kindergarten. It was not until high school did we meet again but it was if no time passed at all. Matt's heart and charisma grew with him, helping him mature into a friend we could all depend on and look to for support. I am deeply sorry for your loss, Matt was and will always be a role model.

I was classmates with Matt. We weren't close but I had a few interactions with him. I just wanted to say, that even in those casual chats it was very apparent how especially kind he is. I don't really know how to put it into words, but it had something to do with how he always seemed to care about and listen intently to what you were saying. Also, had something to do with his huge contagious smile and always being the first to laugh at any joke. Ultimately, I guess I would sum it up into saying; he lifted people up even in the smallest interactions.A rare trait to have, and yet all our fellow classmates would agree that Matt possessed it. I know you already know how special he is, but wanted to say it is clear even as someone who was just a classmate.
I can't even begin to express how sorry I am for your loss. Rest in peace Matt.

Matty, your loss has not even begun to process. I still can't believe it, that you're actually gone. That I'll never see your smile again...hear your laugh...hold you when you're sad...or talk for hours and hours on end about anything and everything. The Matthew-sized hole in my heart can and will never be filled without you here. I cannot thank you enough for the amazing four years of friendship we got to share. You were my person, my better half, my best friend, and my brother. You changed my life forever, you gave me hope that life will get better, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and I will never be sorry enough that I didn't get to show you the same possibilities.
I want you to know that Letty and I are being so strong for you, your whole family is. We love you so much, and miss you every second of every day.
Please watch over our beloved Letty, she needs you right now, she needs you always.
I love you forever Matty, you will never EVER be forgotten.
Until we meet again, sweet sweet angel❤️

My husband, Jeff Simpson, and I both remember Matthew well. I never had the pleasure of teaching him myself, but he was friends with many of my students and would often “sneak” into my class during his spare. He would even participate in the discussions...Jeff taught him when he was in grade 10 and has nothing but pleasant memories of him. We saw him often at his place of work where we buy our weekly chicken for a Sunday dinner. I looked forward to our chats — it was especially nice to see him after he graduated and picked up a few shifts at the Queensway because we were always interested to hear how his studies were going. The universe has gained a very bright light that will be sorely missed. Shine on, dear Matthew...shine on, and Rest In Peace.

Matt was the nicest kid I have met in my life, a real gentle soul without a bad bone in his body. Hockey brought us together into a brotherhood. We became good friends in our youth and throughout high school. Ill always remember the moments with him because he was always smiling during it. I remember talking with Matt the other day about our shared affinity for taking a couple minutes in the morning to compose and wake ourselves up, and our disbelief that some people can just “roll out of bed”. We talked about our upcoming placement, and the similarities between our two designated locations. We chatted about music, which I made a point to ask him about whenever I saw him since he was the only person I recognized at the SLC coffee houses/open mic’s. We joked about the class we were in, worked on our group assignment, and parted ways. That was the extent of the majority of our interactions. Yet despite this, the news of Matt passing away makes me feel so much more shocked, confused and hurt than what one would expect from the passing of an acquaintance. Maybe it’s the fact our circumstances are so similar; being one of 4 guys in SLC’s BPsych program, shared interests and even similar work habits (I remember chatting with Matt about our shared unpopular preference for taking notes by hand rather than using a computer). Who knows? I don’t. All I know is what I feel, and that is that I am sad, and I wish Matt were still here. I feel for Matt’s family, and I hope they can find any way to cope in this situation. We will miss you Matt, I hope you are resting in peace.
