Joan was a very special person and friend. Although she left Kingston some time ago, I think of her often and still miss her. She was always available for a small local adventure to hunt for found sculpture or garden rocks. Her beautiful gardens at her home on Cranbrook St. quite deservedly won the National Award for the best residential garden in Canada in 2009(?).Joan persuaded me to join her on a trip to S. Africa, and a wonderful experience and adventure that none of us who were there will ever forget.
Her research into her family tree revealed that we were in fact distant cousins, as my great grandmother from the Wilsons of the Scotch Line, was a cousin of her great grandfather. We spent many hours searching through the hundreds of pages of letters, documents and interviews, including one with my great grandmother.
Joan will be missed by many good friends who knew her here in Kingston.

My dear Joan,
Spending time with you was a true joy for me. Being able to share our walks through life united us and created a bond as grandmothers for our family and especially for our beautiful granddaughters. I will miss your insight and always joyful spirit for life.
I will continue to spread our grandmotherly love inspired by your spirit.
Be free and dance with Joy!
With love and admiration,
Ingrid

Joan and I taught together at Loyalist Collegiate the year it opened. During the year she became pregnant with Kathy and I with my David. Joan helped me find an obstetrician. I remember taking David to Kathy’s first birthday party. It was in the back yard of the house on Palace Road. The babies were served strips of toast.
I am so sorry you have lost your Mom and Grandma.

I just heard the sad news about Joan She was a dear friend who I, unfortunately, lost touch with after she moved to Keswick. She will always be remembered as such a kind, gentle soul whose spirit was as beautiful as her wondrous gardens. Once she was incapable of living on her own, it was heartwarming to hear she was in assisted living near Kathy. Her family meant the world to Joan. When she moved to Peterborough, I was one of the first Queen's friends she called. I am so thankful she did, because it led to years of a very rewarding friendship. I'll always remember that big smile, those red curls, the freckles and the glint of love & life in her eyes. Much sympathy to all at this sad time.
